Brebis lourdaises dans les prés

My approach

I am originally from Val d'Azun, in the Hautes-Pyrénées, where I grew up surrounded by mountains, my father's sheep and cows, and my mother's paintings. Ever since I was little, I have always loved creating things with my hands: pottery, painting, pyrography... But it was thread, and especially wool, that attracted me the most.

My grandmother taught me to knit when I was a child, and this passion has never left me. Today, I live in Belgium, where I continue to explore and develop my world around this extraordinary natural material.

With a PhD in physical chemistry, I worked for many years in scientific research, first in France and then in Belgium, where I now live with my family. But over time, knitting has become an increasingly important part of my daily life. It is an activity that brings me enormous joy and balance. Little by little, I began to create my own designs, then to transform some of them into patterns. I discovered a real source of fulfillment in this creative freedom.

It was while knitting every day and transforming wool by hand in my workshop that I wondered about the origin of this material: where does the wool we use come from? How is it produced and processed? What happens to our local breeds, often forgotten in favor of the popularity of merino wool? The sheep of the Pyrenees, among which I grew up, also have rich wool that deserves to be showcased.

Even far from my mountains, my rural roots and my love for the yarn arts gradually took over. So I made an important decision: I left the world of research to throw myself fully into the entrepreneurial adventure and bring my project to life.

My name is Fanny Girard-Sahun. After several years in scientific research, I founded Knitty and Woolly in 2023, with the desire to promote wool from the Hautes-Pyrénées and to continue, in my own way, the project launched by my father more than 30 years ago: to raise awareness and preserve the Lourdaise sheep.

This local mountain breed is still endangered today, and I am committed to highlighting the quality of its wool. I have also chosen to combine it with wool from Tarasconnaise sheep, another Pyrenean breed, to create a unique yarn that is 100% local and natural.

With Knitty and Woolly, I offer:

  • Knitting and weaving yarn, processed in France by wool industry professionals with ancestral and artisanal know-how.

  • Handmade creations, such as bracelets woven from hand-spun wool.

  • Creative workshops, to share my passion in Belgium and introduce people to this natural fiber, as well as the simple, ancient techniques that invite us to slow down.
